Irish People

Name: Bobby Sands

Irish Name:

Born: 1954

Died: 1981

Origin: Belfast, Northern Ireland

Meaning: Bobby Sands was a member of the Provisional IRA, a writer, and a hunger striker whose death in prison during the 1981 protest became a defining event in the Northern Ireland conflict.

Story:

Bobby Sands grew up in Belfast during a period of deepening sectarian division and political violence. Imprisoned for his involvement in the republican movement, he became a leading figure in the 1981 hunger strike at the Maze Prison, where prisoners sought political recognition for their status.

Sands died after sixty-six days on hunger strike, aged twenty-seven. During his imprisonment, he also wrote poetry, reflections, and accounts of prison life. His death had far-reaching political consequences and remains a deeply contested part of modern Irish history. His story offers an opportunity to explore conviction, sacrifice, political conflict, and the human cost of the Troubles without reducing a complex life to a single interpretation.
