Irish People

Name: Mary Elmes

Irish Name:

Born: 1908

Died: 2002

Origin: Cork, Ireland

Meaning: Mary Elmes was an Irish humanitarian who helped save Jewish children from Nazi persecution while working with refugee families in France during the Second World War.

Story:

Mary Elmes grew up in Cork and studied at Trinity College Dublin before beginning a career in international relief work. During the Spanish Civil War, she helped care for people displaced by conflict. When the Second World War brought persecution and deportation to France, she continued her work under increasingly dangerous conditions.

Working with humanitarian colleagues, Mary helped Jewish children escape internment camps and find safer refuge. Her actions were courageous, practical, and carried out at enormous personal risk. For decades, her contribution received little public attention. Today, she is remembered as an Irish woman whose quiet determination helped save lives during one of Europe's darkest periods.
