Irish Saints

Name: Saint Ita

Irish Name: Naomh Íte

Meaning: Thirst for holiness

Story:

Saint Ita was one of the most important women of early Irish Christianity and is remembered as a spiritual mother to generations of monks and saints. She was born in County Waterford around the sixth century and, according to tradition, came from a noble family.

Ita eventually settled in Hy Many in County Limerick, where she founded a community at Cluain Credail, now known as Killeedy. There she established a religious community for women and devoted herself to prayer, teaching, hospitality, and the care of those around her.

Her reputation for holiness drew many people to her, including young students who came to her for spiritual instruction. One of the most famous was Saint Brendan the Navigator, who is said to have regarded Ita as his spiritual foster mother. Irish tradition remembers her as a woman of great wisdom and compassion.

Ita was sometimes called the "foster mother of the saints" because of the number of religious figures who sought her guidance. Her life demonstrates the important role women played in the development of Ireland's early Christian communities, even when their stories have received less attention than those of the great male founders.

She is traditionally associated with a deep devotion to the Eucharist and with a life of simplicity and self-denial. Stories about Ita emphasize her concern for the poor and her determination to place love of God at the center of everyday life.

Saint Ita died around 570 and was buried at Killeedy, where her memory has continued for centuries.

Her story is a reminder that influence does not always come through grand journeys or great buildings. Sometimes it comes through teaching, hospitality, prayer, and the quiet formation of other people. Saint Ita's spiritual influence helped shape some of the greatest saints of Ireland.
