Irish Expressions

Slang: Giving out

Meaning: Scolding; complaining; telling someone off.

Story:

To give out is to complain or scold, often at considerable length. An Irish parent might be particularly gifted at it. You can also say someone is giving out about something when they're complaining about it.

Example: Mam was giving out to me for leaving the door open.
