Sailing Cross
Regular price $69.95Story
On the remote island of Illauntaunig, off the coast of County Kerry, early Christian monks faced two essential concerns: nourishing the body and nourishing the soul. The sea provided their daily sustenance, while faith gave meaning and direction to their lives.
Inspired by an ancient carving found on the island, the Sailing Cross depicts a cross standing in the waves, its shape also resembling a sailing boat with a mast. It captures the close relationship between faith and the natural world that shaped the lives of Ireland's early monastic communities.
A meaningful piece of Irish Christian art, connecting the enduring symbols of the cross and the sea.

Irish Heritage
Ireland's early Christian monks often sought solitude on remote islands and rugged coastlines, where the natural world became part of their spiritual lives. Along the western coast, isolated settlements became places of prayer, contemplation, and devotion.
Illauntaunig is one such place. Its ancient carving offers a glimpse into the lives of those who lived there, reminding us that faith was not separate from everyday life but woven into it.
