Penny Draughts / Checkers set based on Irish Penny designs from the 1930s. This set comes with a unique chess board engraved with the 32 counties of Ireland.
When I was younger the Irish currency changed to decimal currency, this meant that we had a lot of old coins that had little commercial value, they had a great value to us as children as we would use them to play games such as closest to the wall, pitch and toss and draughts, while the girls played Piggy with the shoe polish tin. We would draw out a draughts board with the chalk and use the pennies to play draughts for ours and sometimes we would play piggy but only if there where no breakie bones. Now that I am a little older I have made my own set of draughts using some of the old designs from that time, they are made using a mix of pewter powder bronze powder and crushed limestone.
The 32 county board has the names of the Thirty Two counties of Ireland representing all the children of the Island who played with these coins.
I hope this brings back good memories of simpler times... let the games begin.
